Google agrees to let a third party audit its ad metrics (GOOG, GOOGL)
February 21, 2017

YouTube has agreed to let a third party audit its advertising metrics amid growing concerns that platforms owned by Facebook and Google may not be reporting their data accurately.

In an announcement in The Wall Street Journal, Google, which owns YouTube, said it will allow the Media Rating Council, an ad industry group, to track ad measurements on the video network. The move will make sure YouTube is accurately reporting viewing statistics to its advertisers.

Facebook also announced it would allow the Media Rating Council to audit its ad metrics following a few recent incidents where the social network admitted it miscalculated some of its ad metrics, angering advertisers.

There hasn't been any evidence so far that Google or YouTube has miscalculated metrics, but the audit by the Media Rating Council should help alleviate concerns from advertisers.

The next iPhone could make it so you never have to worry about having enough storage space (AAPL)
February 21, 2017

Apple's Asian supply chain is gearing up to build next-generation iPhones ahead of a launch later this year, and it's generating a lot of chatter about what to expect from the next iPhone.

Research firm TrendForce issued a report on Tuesday with its predictions for Apple's next iPhone, citing “information from the supply chain.”

Lots of details from the TrendForce report line up with current rumors, but there's one new wrinkle it suggests: the “high-end” iPhone could come with only two storage options, 64GB and 256GB.

TrendForce analysts also believe the “next high-end iPhone” will come with 3GB of RAM. Because TrendForce issues reports on DRAM and other memory components, it's a subject that the company is likely to have some authority on in its forecasts.

The iPhone 7 starts with 32GB of storage space for $650, which is an increase from previous iPhone models with came with 16GB of storage space — which was too little, as users found that space quickly ..

This 3D artist spent over a year turning computer loading icons into playful animations
February 21, 2017

3D artist Raphael Vangelis used stop-motion animation on a variety of well-known computer loading icons.

His project featured 30 different loading screens, from companies such as Facebook, Spotify, and Google.

It took him over a year to complete his designs, having printed and painted pieces by hand, before applying the stop-motion animation.

He wanted to “pay homage” to all the time we waste starring at computer loading screens.

There’s a simple rule you can follow if you can’t decide whether to buy or lease a new car
February 21, 2017

Buy or lease? It's the question I get asked most often by people who aren't car experts.

I've offered some convoluted and customized responses in the past, but over the last year or so, I've concluded that you can deal with this inquiry by applying a simple rule.

Here it is: Don't buy a car if all you want is transportation.

Explaining the rule is a bit more complicated.

If you buy a new car, you're buying both an asset and a depreciating asset. There's no such thing, for the most part, as a car that will be worth more in the future than you've paid for it (usually with an auto loan, which means principle plus interest of five years or more). Stuff like collectible Ferraris are an exception. But the price of entry is of course in the hundreds of thousands. And you have to wait for that vintage value to develop. For, like, 30 years.

So you buy an asset that you won't own free-and-clear for half a decade, but in the time that you work on..

Netflix was forced to take down a Germany-wide billboard campaign that featured a dismembered finger and aimed to promote its new series “Santa Clarita Diet”, after the public complained it was “disgusting,” the Berliner Tagesspiegel reported on Monday.

Toyota just teased a new electric concept car ahead of the Geneva Motor Show
February 21, 2017

The Geneva Motor Show is rapidly approaching and Toyota already gave us a glimpse of what it plans to show.

Toyota released a teaser photo of a brand new electric vehicle concept, the i-TRIL concept, on Monday. Toyota said the concept is meant to showcase the automaker's research into “more engaging environmentally-friendly mobility solutions” in a press release.

The vehicle will feature a one-plus-two seating layout, meaning there is one seat up front and two in the back, making it more like a motorcycle with additional room for passengers. Toyota said the concept is meant as a “viable alternative” to traditional segment cars and motorcycles for those looking to drive in urban environments.

Toyota said the concept will also feature its Active Lean technology that we first saw in the automaker's i-Road concept — a compact electric vehicle designed for city driving.

Toyota's Active Lean is meant to improve maneuverability in two-wheelers by automatically moving the wh..
